You know, there are so many things we can spend our money on. I have a neighbor with a pair of shoes and matching handbag for every outfit she owns. Another neighbor is into quilting and has a closet full of fabric that she may-or may not-make into a quilt, but she loves buying pretty fabric. My husband, Sven, has a colleague that collects guns–all his “extra” cash goes to beef-up his collection. There are so many thing we can choose to spend money on.
Sven and I were talking about this tonight. He’d spend his extra money on watches. (No surprise there.) When he asked me what I like spending money on, I had to think about it. It took me a while to realize that as much as I think I enjoy spending money on cute paper for making cards or memory books, or as much as I like to think I’m an intellectual (ha!) spending all my money on great books… when it comes down to it, I spend my money on food.
Before I left my career to be a stay home mom, I loved to eat out. Let’s face it, what woman really wants to come home from a busy day at the office to have to: 1. figure out what to fix for dinner, 2. fix dinner, 3. clean up dinner? Not me! (I liked working late because work would frequently pick up the tab on dinner.) Now that I stay home, I have more time than money, so I spend more time preparing meals than eating out– that just means we spend money on groceries rather than restaurants. Knowing my weakness when it comes to blowing the budget on food, I avoid going to the store because there’s always something for a good price, and gee, it would look great filling up my pantry shelves if I don’t need it right now… With that well-stocked pantry, I can make a variety of meals without having to run to the store for special ingredients. The security of all that food down in my pantry somehow helps me sleep better at night. (“Trouble at work, honey? At least we’ll be able to eat.”) Ultimately, the reason I like to spend money on food is because it’s so easily justified: “Well, we’ve gotta eat!”
What about you? What is it that you spend your money on?
